Higher National Diploma Nursing

HND Programme2 yearsNBTE / NMCN

Programme Overview

The Higher National Diploma Nursing programme is designed for holders of an ND in Nursing who wish to deepen their clinical expertise, leadership capabilities, and research skills. The curriculum advances students from enrolled nurse competencies to the level expected of a fully Registered Nurse.

Students engage with complex clinical scenarios across medical, surgical, critical care, oncology, and community health settings. Leadership, management, and evidence-based practice modules prepare graduates for charge nurse and specialist roles.

Successful completion makes graduates eligible for full registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) as Registered Nurses, opening doors to specialist practice, management, and further academic study.

Yes. Graduates of NBTE-accredited ND Nursing programmes from other institutions may apply, subject to NBTE transfer requirements and ECONS screening.
What is the difference between an Enrolled Nurse and a Registered Nurse?
An Enrolled Nurse (EN) holds an ND and practises under supervision. A Registered Nurse (RN) holds an HND or higher, is fully licensed by NMCN, and can practise independently.
Will my HND qualify me to study for a degree?
Yes. HND graduates may pursue a Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) or top-up degree at universities that accept NBTE HND holders, subject to the institution's requirements.
Is there a research component?
Yes. The Research Project in Year 2 Semester 2 is a major requirement. Students conduct original research supervised by a faculty member and present their findings.
